The Adult Literacy
Group

Since its inception in 2009, the Tharaka Women’s Welfare Program (TWWP) has made significant strides in empowering women of all ages in Tharaka North Sub-county. While the program initially focused on providing scholarships and books to younger women, it quickly became evident that adult women also required support to achieve their full potential. This led to the development of an adult literacy program aimed at equipping illiterate women with fundamental skills in reading, writing, and social interaction.

The adult literacy program has been transformative for approximately 1,000 women who have participated since its launch. Beyond learning basic literacy skills, these women have gained the confidence to register for national examinations, an essential step for pursuing higher education and various career paths. This newfound literacy has opened doors to numerous opportunities, allowing women to become intellectuals and professionals in their respective fields.

Moreover, the program has created a supportive community where women can openly discuss their social challenges and receive guidance from TWWP professionals. This aspect of the program has been crucial in addressing the broader social issues faced by participants, providing them with not only educational tools but also emotional and practical support.

In essence, TWWP’s adult literacy program has been a cornerstone in empowering women by bridging gaps in education and providing comprehensive support. It highlights the program's commitment to fostering an environment where women can thrive academically and professionally, ultimately contributing to their overall well-being and societal advancement.
