Women’s Income Generating Activities
Under the Tharaka Women's Welfare Program (TWWP), women are empowered to generate their own income and supplement their household budgets. This initiative has enabled participants to engage in diverse socio-economic activities such as basket weaving, table banking, and merry-go-rounds, giving them the confidence to manage their finances and improve their livelihoods.
One of the most successful income-generating activities under the program is basket weaving. Women are mentored to create high-quality, handwoven baskets, which are marketed by partners in the U.S. under a unique weaver brand name, each product accompanied by the artisan’s personal story. Since the program’s inception in 2014, it has provided financial independence to approximately 100 women, generating over KES 1,000,000 in income from the sale of baskets. This has not only helped women contribute meaningfully to their household expenses but has also given them a sense of pride in their craft and abilities.
The benefits of the program extend beyond the immediate financial gains. Several women who were mentored in basket weaving have gained enough confidence and skills to explore additional markets through independent traders. This highlights the lasting impact of the program, which equips women not only with a reliable source of income but also with the knowledge, self-assurance, and networking opportunities to expand their ventures.
Through these initiatives, the TWWP has fostered a supportive environment where women can thrive socially and economically, breaking traditional barriers and creating a sustainable future for their families and communities.
